Bits and Bobs for April 30

Roll call! Who’s going to the Living Planet Expo in Sydney this Sunday?! I’ll be there repping vegaroo and there will be all kinds of yummy food and speakers (who may or may not be yummy). Tweet at me from the event if you want to meet up!

Also coming up in Sydney, Animals Australia are looking for volunteers to staff their stall at the Mind Body Spirit Festival at Darling Harbour, May 13-16. I can’t find details on their website but I’m sure you can email them for more info. There’s festivals happening in Melbourne and Brisbane too for all you crystal-worshipping vegans seeking “Animal Insights into the Afterlife”. No judgement, weirdos.

Isabel Lucas has been named Australia’s Sexiest Vegetarian and credits her conversion to the film Earthlings. I guess I moved here too late to be nominated. There’s always next year!

Roll call! Who wants to make me this Sri Lankan No-Chicken Curry from Chew on This? Anyone? Anyone?? …Bueller?

Is anyone interested in writing Master Chef recaps for vegaroo a la my favourite San Francisco blog vegansaurus? You all certainly love to tweet about it CONSTANTLY! I guess if I had television I’d be all over that too.

There are more vegan bake sales happening this weekend in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. Best of luck to all the bakers! Drop us a line and let us know how it goes.

Happy Weekend, everyone!

Happy ANZAC Day!

ANZAC Day is nearly over, but I hope you’ve all been enjoying a relaxing weekend. My kitchen and I are still recovering from this weekend’s bake sale which went extremely well, raising $940! We’ll have a full wrap-up later this week.

In the mean time though, if you’re looking for a vegan Anzac Biscuit recipe, here’s one from Taste.com.au. It’s the recipe Mandee used for the biscuits she sold at the bakesale, though she used gluten-free flour for it. They’re actually one of the easiest recipes to veganise because they’re naturally egg-free, as eggs were quite hard to come by during the war.

Ok, now that that tradition has been cleared up for me, can anyone explain what the deal is with two up? I mean, it’s just coin-flipping, right?? I have so much to learn still about this wacky country.

Bits and Bobs for April 23

Just a few bits and bobs this week because baking is consuming my life for the next 24 hours. I’m making some savoury tomato rosemary scones for the Sydney Vegan Bake Sale, amongst other goodies, and vegaroo! contributor Mandee is making more of these amazing looking mini jelly donuts. I BETTER SEE YOU THERE… NO EXCUSES!!!!

In non-bakesale news… Get your esoteric food porn fix with Condiment magazine which describes itself as “Adventures in Food and Form”. The Unbearable Lightness of Being Hungry has an interview up with its founder.

And for those interested in becoming… uh… food porn stars… it sounds like this would have been an awesome workshop if it weren’t for all that prosciutto and crap. Who wants to teach a vegan food photography workshop??

You crazy for this one, Penguin Group Australia. The publishing company recently released “The Pasta Bible” with one teeny tiny misprint. A tagliatelle recipe featured “salt and freshly ground black people”. Bon appetit! And because I can’t resist, here’s a recipe for tagliatelle with ground black pepper.

Hey is that Basil Pizza I spy in the gossip pages? It must be, since Jess of the Veronicas is eating there, and no doubt scarfing a vegan supreme slice. P.S. Have you seen her tacos video? Good times.

Lastly, in vegans-are-ahead-of-the-times-as-always news, a futurist (which wikipedia tells me is a real job) predicts that Australians will move to a more vegetarian diet over time.

Ok, now go bake! Or go fast so you can eat lots of baked goods! If not in Sydney, then in any one of the other bake sales happening this weekend (and next) in Australia! And tell us all about how awesome it was!

Vegan Easter Recipe Round-Up

Oh boy, it’s nearly Easter time! That time of year when people gorge themselves on eggs, lamb, rabbits, duck, and the cutest animals imaginable. Oh don’t you just love the holidays!

The less cynical among you are hopefully at least planning to enjoy a lovely four-day weekend. Here are some egg-free options for celebrating… it’s our vegan Easter recipe round-up!

Desserts:

Soon to be vegaroo! contributor, Mandee, has veganized an almond croissant recipe based on a recipe from Poh’s Kitchen and the results are drool-worthy!

Coincidentally, the adorable Poh recently posted this Malaysian coconut agar agar dessert that just so happens to be vegan.

It wouldn’t be Easter without Hot Cross Buns. Anyone got the goods on where to buy vegan buns? [Edit: Oh, apparently Radical Grocery has them!]

Savoury:

This green coleslaw could make a great, healthy side dish, as would this cos, avocado and pine nut salad, both from Taste.com.au.

Skip the coloured eggs and opt for a tofu scramble instead. Here are some recipes from Lisa Dempster, Tal Ronnen, and a basic fat-free version from Happy Herbivore. The best thing about a tofu scramble is you can really just throw anything in there!

Speaking of eggs, I’ve always loved this eggless mini-quiche recipe from FatFree Vegan Kitchen. Her gardener’s pie is looking mighty tasty as well.

VegWeb also has a pretty good list of Easter Recipes started, and you can post your own!
