Adelaide = Organic Vegan Bliss and More!

Adelaide has always been a semi-magical place to me.  Being a planned city, mostly flat (except for those pretty hills), and with a peak hour that’s at about the same level as Sunday morning traffic in Sydney, it’s just so easy to get around!  It’s also where most of my Australian-based relatives live and, for me, visiting there has always meant a whole lot of fun.  But even more importantly, after a recent visit for a cousin’s wedding, I now also know Adelaide as a superb destination for a whole lot of vegan-eating-pleasure.

I’d done my homework and asked a local which vegan outlets shouldn’t be missed.  The resounding recommendation was for Bliss Organic Café  and with this in mind I promptly booked accommodation that was within three blocks to provide for easy access (even though, as stated previously, almost everywhere in Adelaide is “easy access” compared to Sydney).

This was definitely A Good Move.  We ate at Bliss three times and were never disappointed.  Our choices included:

Bliss also houses a “1-stop vegan shop“, with an array of vegan goodies for sale such as groceries, personal care items, books and Vegan Wares wallets and belts.

Even though I would have been happy eating at Bliss three times a day, it’s not open for dinner except on Fridays, so we did extend our explorations to two other options: the Eggless Dessert Café in Goodwood; and the Pure Vegetarian buffet in the Central Markets.  (NB – there are actually plenty more vegan-friendly places to try in Adelaide – and given more time I would have done so; but I probably would have gone back to Bliss several times over again as well!).

Spring Rolls for dessert - what a great idea!

The Eggless Dessert Café is a very popular joint that boasts a new mouth-watering menu each month.  It’s clearly a hit with the locals: doors opened at 8pm, and within about half an hour the place was almost full.  Given it’s a “dessert café”, there were only three savoury dishes when we visited (but at least all were vegan).  Be warned if you are expecting to eat a full meal there: each is entrée sized, so you might want to order all three!  Some dishes contain dairy, but the vegan desserts are clearly marked and it was incredibly hard to choose which to have.

The Pure Vegetarian buffet was difficult to find as the Central Markets are rather extensive and it wasn’t marked on any of the Market maps at different entrances.  But it’s worth the search because once located you can choose from a great selection of very affordable Taiwanese food.  (Tip: the entrance to the food court this venue is located in is on the Eastern side of Moonta Street – don’t try finding it from within the main underground Central Markets maze.)

Sadly, there haven’t been any further wedding invitations since we arrived back home, so I’m now left trying to come up with an excuse to return to Adelaide for more delicious vegan eating expeditions.  If you’re lucky enough to be a local, check out the regular social gatherings run by Adelaide Vegans – they even run a monthly Meet-Up at Bliss!
