Vegging Out: Bodhi in the Park, Sydney

Bodhi in the Park is a family-run vegan restaurant and has been operating for more than 20 years. I’d heard it can be difficult to find but there are plenty of directions online. The restaurant is located below St Mary’s Cathedral’s forecourt, the stairs leading down are between the cathedral and the Phillip Park swimming pool.

I went for yum cha on a Saturday, we were seated outside and it’s a gorgeous setting for a restaurant as it over looks a park. As soon as we were seated we were being offered dishes and green tea.

We began with a salad in bean curd topped with satay sauce which was delicious and very refreshing. The next dish we tried was the satay tofu which was nutty and full of flavour and one of my favourite dishes.

Next we tried the vegetable spring rolls which were crispy and not too oily, followed by shiitake dumplings, another of my favourites and some sesame sweet potato cakes which were sticky, chewy and really good.

At one stage our table was so full we had to turn the waiters away even though we were very keen to try the magenta-coloured beetroot dumplings. Everything looked so good. In the end we had nine dishes plus green tea and we had some a lot left over to take away.

The service was quick and the staff we were friendly and it’s fantastic to be able to eat at an all-vegan restaurant, I’ll definitely be back for more.

Bodhi in the Park is located on the corner of College & William Streets, Sydney.

What were the prices like? I’ve only ever been on Valentine’s Day when, it occurs to me now, the prices were probably hiked a little. Wondering if it’s cheaper for lunch or on a normal day?

It was about $65 for the nine dishes plus 2 pots of green tea, I wanted a menu to take away (so I had a record of the pricing) but they don’t print them.

I haven’t been to Bodhi in about 7 years so I am a little shocked by the cost. I do remember however how delicious everything is. Am I remembering correctly that Bodhi is a BYO restaurant?

I really enjoyed Bodhi when I visited it last year, but I was really surprised by the cost!

(also I should set up my profile so I can get an awesome user pic!)

Yeah, it was around $100 for V-day dinner, but that included dessert and wine, which, to answer Sean’s question means that it’s no longer BYO. In fact I think they have a pretty decent bar if I recall correctly. May have to make another trip for the yum cha!
