Vegging Out: Funky Pies in Sydney

People often ask me if there are any foods I miss since going vegan. The answer, honestly, is not really. When I can readily consume vegan baklava, pizza and french toast, I don’t want for much. Since moving to Australia though, I have noticed the way people’s eyes light up when they talk of meat pies and sausage rolls. Apparently it’s a tragedy that I live so close to the famed Bourke Street Bakery and cannot consume these buttery delights.
Can I just say as an aside, that anyone who uses the word “deprivation” to describe vegans, needs to get some fucking perspective on the world. Deprivation is having to trek several kilometres to get clean drinking water. It is not a goddamn vegan S’MORE-TOPPED CINNAMON BUN.
But I digress… For those taking pity on me for choosing not to partake in pig intestines wrapped in cow lactation crust, shed no more tears.
For I have tasted the Funky Pie. And it is good.
Oh boy, is it good. One bite into the flaky crust and I started wondering, are these really vegan? One day people will stop wondering/saying that. They will instead proclaim things like ,”These cupcakes are delicious; they must be vegan!” (Oh wait, they’re already starting to.)
But seriously, my “Funky Chunky” pie replete with faux-meaty bits, gravy, veggies and mash was so good it started making me think that it was my destiny to move to Australia and consume vegan pies. Every day. They’ve got all kinds of flavours with silly names like “No Worry Curry” and “Easy Chic ‘n’ Cheezy.” They even have brekkie rolls stuffed with veggie sausage.
Boom! Take that, Australia! VEGAN SAUSAGE ROLLS!
Funky Pies can be found in the refrigerated section of any hip health food store like Vegan’s Choice. Though I recommend making the trip out to their storefront in Bondi to get one fresh out of the oven. But be sure to wait at least thirty minutes after eating a funky pie before going for a swim. Just like mom always said.

Wow, that sounds good. I walked right by there the other day, and I thought about going in, but my beautiful wife had already been and she wanted to try something new. The place we ended up was pretty awesome, too, but hopefully I’ll get a chance to go back and try Funky Pies some time.

Wow, tell me more about this beautiful wife of yours, internet stranger. She sounds like a great lady who probably found some delicious falafel for you to eat instead.

I approve of the snark in this post.
Funky Pies is awesome. I wish it wasn’t such a trek to get there…in fact, hmm, I might swing by Bondi tomorrow on my way to the eastern suburbs!

Mmm Funky Pies! I had 2 at the cruelty free festival (yes I am greedy). Everytime I go to Sydney I feel obliged to reward myself with funky pies.

Hi Catherine, thanks for your comment! Having multiple Funky Pies is not greedy, it’s just sensible
